‘A Half Dozen’ oil on linen

I found this old egg box in a shed in St Vigeans, where we lived. I have kept it for nearly fifty years with the thought that one day I could use it in a painting.

This is a simple still-life, the old egg box on it’s side, six eggs and a blue and white striped dish cloth, a plain background and  a good side light. I did consider adding straw, more eggs, different backgrounds, in the end the only addition was one small feather.

There were a couple of tricky technical problems, the volume of the box, the ’roundness’ of the eggs and the drop down fold of the fabric over the side of the table. All of these were resolved with careful attention to tone and any reflected light.
